    Mortgage Forgiveness

Normally, debt forgiven is considered income, but qualified principal residence indebtedness is excluded through 2020. It applies to some taxpayers who have had debt forgiveness due to things like foreclosure, loan modification, short sale, or deed in lieu of foreclosure.

Taxpayers involved in discharge debt should consult early with their tax advisor to determine the effect.
